Running their own business was lonely business for Alex Fischer of Brattleboro. While they enjoyed their clients, they wanted the energy that can only come from a team. In 2020, Alex says that joining @abookkeepingcooperative (ABC) was the best decision. “Having a team is incredible. Our work is centered around building the skills, systems, and confidence of those working toward a just world beyond capitalism. We believe that finances are resources to be collectively managed and those skills are necessary for [these] organizations.”

A Bookkeeping Cooperative (ABC) was founded as an employee-owned business to provide bookkeeping, consulting, training, and workshops for the solidarity economy. Alex and seven other employees are also the owners. “Some say that we have no bosses; others say that we have eight bosses,” they said. ABC staff owners share everything in their justice-based finance business from learning and projects to financial surpluses and deficits.

Many things set ABC apart. Besides every worker being an owner, they are a majority women, queer, and non-binary team with a majority being BIPOC owned and managed. And they are truly fun finance people as Alex says, “We are so much fun! Workshops are super fun with games, bad finance jokes, pop culture…Fun is important for people to feel comfortable talking about finance and oppressive financial systems.”
