Meg Simon, a senior at Middlebury College, received the Hockey Humanitarian Award on April 10 at the Park MGM Ballroom in Las Vegas during the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four weekend. Simon is the first student from Middlebury and only the second athlete from the New England Small College Athletic Conference to earn this recognition.
The award, now in its 31st year, honors a college hockey player who makes significant contributions to both their team and community through leadership and volunteer service. According to organizers, it is given to “college hockey’s finest citizen—a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to his or her community through leadership in volunteerism.”
Simon majors in economics and is known for her involvement both on campus and within the local community. Her volunteering includes work with organizations such as the Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association, Special Olympics Vermont, and Yellow House Community. The latter provides safe housing and vocational opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Simon’s achievements were recently highlighted in The IX Sports. Middlebury Athletics has also produced a profile of Simon that details her accomplishments as a student-athlete.
The recognition underscores Simon’s commitment to service beyond athletics, reflecting broader values of teamwork, inclusion, and support for individuals with disabilities.
